“It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.” Mahatma Gandhi
PNG has the lowest health status of all countries in the Pacific region. There has been little improvement in almost all health indicators due to the difficulties facing the majority rural population in accessing basic health services. It is widely acknowledged that a primary challenge facing the health system is the lack of trained health professionals, especially rural-based community health workers.
KTF is investing in the sustainable delivery of primary medical care in PNG. Our team is working closely with national and provincial authorities to develop an advanced School of Health. The School of Health will train committed community health workers (CHW’s). Providing a two-year diploma in community health care, it will be one of only twelve training centres in the country.
By increasing the number of qualified CHW’s, we aim to increase the number of communities able to access medical care. This will result in decrease preventable illnesses, increase in the number of births attended by a qualified CHW, and decrease maternal and under 5 child mortality rates.
