PNG has the lowest health status of all countries in the Pacific region. There has been little improvement in almost all health indicators due to the difficulties the population faces in accessing basic health services. While the context is different in every Province, PNG’s health system is severely affected by entrenched system-wide challenges. Our health program works with communities to increase access to primary healthcare across remote and rural communities. Our aims are ambitious, and will only be achieved through the long-term investment in the training, posting, resourcing and support of community health workers – the cornerstone of the PNG healthcare system.
Our team is working closely with national and provincial authorities to develop and implement an advanced ‘School of Health’ that will train committed and professional community health workers. Providing a two-year diploma in community health care, the ‘School of Health’ will be one of only twelve health worker training centres in the country.
