Kokoda College’s quest for continuous improvement
Navigating complex COVID-19 border requirements, KTF’s leadership team has visited PNG for the first time since the start of the pandemic. We’re excited and delighted to be visiting our projects and communities to see the incredible progress of the last 12 months. Adapting to the new normal and in the quest for continuous improvement, we’ve changed the way we deliver our projects by increasing the already significant involvement of our PNG team and embraced technology to support program delivery.
Kokoda College is our ‘home’, KTF’s first facility built in 2015 as our initial step in the transition from a scholarship-based organisation to addressing the critical shortage of qualified teachers in rural and remote Oro Province through education solutions.
Since then, in conjunction with the communities we work with, we have been continuously improving and strengthening what we do, adapting to their evolving needs to ensure projects lead to long-term impact for the community. One thing that has helped us along the journey is rigorous capture of the data behind our projects, helping us to understand the effectiveness of what we do, and to make any necessary adjustments along the way.
While visiting the college, COO Mike took the opportunity to introduce the team to our new college Student Management Database, that records student details, results, and progress toward their academic goals. Accessible to the College team in remote Kou Kou village, the database is housed in Sydney and enables everyone involved in the project has real-time visibility of our student cohort, whether they are at the College or at our offices in Port Moresby and Sydney. This is an incredible development to help monitor student outcomes, program effectiveness and the end result of improving education outcomes in Oro Province and beyond.
While at the College, the team also took the opportunity to deliver training updates to KTF staff, students and partners, covering key safeguarding and inclusion topics including Child Protection, Prevention of Sexual Abuse and Harassment, gender equity and practical ways of ensuring people living with a disability into College activities.
We’re proud to be building the capacity of our programs, team and partners in the spirit of continuous improvement, maintaining high standards to deliver the best possible results to all stakeholders – our students, the community, the PNG education department and our supporters alike.
Kokoda College is supported by the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP) and the Kokoda Initiative.
