2021 ARCHER LEADERSHIP PROGRAM - APPLICATIONS CLOSE 31 JAN 2021

In 2021, KTF is continuing its Archer Leadership Program – an opportunity for students studying across all tertiary institutions in Papua New Guinea. The Archer Leadership Program is a year-long leadership development opportunity for exceptional PNG tertiary students who have demonstrated leadership potential. The program offers successful recipients a year-long suite of activities and programs aimed at developing their leadership skills and abilities. The premise behind the program is that intensive leadership support and resource investment during a student’s final year of tertiary studies will provide the recipient with a new platform to engage in leadership work and activities after they graduate. The leadership program will identify, foster, and invest in an annual cohort of promising leaders and will provide a range of opportunities and resources to grow their leadership skills.

The Archer Leadership Program is proudly supported by the Fred P. Archer Trust, managed by Perpetual Trustees, Newcrest Mining and Airways Hotel.

This year, there are three ways to apply. Click here to go to the application portal.

Program Outline

As for all of KTF’s programs, the Archer program has adapted to our new normal living with COVID-19 with a few changes to the 2021 program, as outlined below:

·      Education investment – the program covers a contribution towards the students’ tertiary fees for the final year of their studies at University or College in PNG[1].

·      Living allowance – the program provides a contribution towards the students’ boarding and food costs for the final year of their studies at University or College in PNG.

·      Resource investment – each student receives an allowance to purchase educational and other relevant resources for their tertiary studies and leadership development. Resources may include laptop computers, mobile phones, wireless internet connections, textbooks, reading books, professional attire and materials to assist specific study areas. Resources will be purchased in Australia and shipped to PNG during 2021.

·      Leadership courses – the cohort of students will participate in a number of leadership workshops throughout the year with presenters and facilitators joining in person and virtually. It is anticipated that 4-5 half day workshops will be held throughout the year and will include visits to community organisations and projects working to address complex social challenges in PNG.

·      Mentoring – each student will be matched with a prominent mentor in PNG or Australia who will support them with guidance and coaching during their year-long leadership program. This one-on-one support is vital to students’ learning throughout the year and has been shown to have an enormous and transformative impact on students’ self-esteem, motivation, future goals, and leadership development.

·      Community Project - students will also undertake a community development project during the course of the year and will be supported financially and with mentoring and project supervision to undertake this project.

·      Work experience placement – students will undertake a 1-2 week work experience placement towards the end of their studies in an organisation relevant to their field of study. The placements will be selected in consultation with KTF and the students’ mentor with the view to create a pathway to employment for the student after they graduate.

·      As COVID-19 has significantly disrupted international travel, the two-week exchange trip to Australia has been removed from the 2021 program. Elements of the exchange will be replicated throughout the 2021 leadership workshops.

·      Pending the successful control of COVID-19 in PNG, a Kokoda Track crossing and/or visit to KTF’s Kokoda College MAY be operated for the 2021 cohort in replacement of the exchange. This is dependant on SOE approval and will only be facilitated if there is no risk of community transmission of COVID-19 along and around the Kokoda Track.
